View from the window

View from the window is a quick sketch of a late afternoon made with the leftover paint.

It is on oil paper as my aim was simply to enjoy the process of painting a view I look at every day and that I love so much, because of the lush trees and the green grass.

As I was painting from my living room, the light indoors was not enough to see well but I did my best.

Summer clothesline & View to the kitchen

On this day I carried on my exploration of colours and values with two tiny studies.

The first one is Summer clothesline, featuring my the clothesline seen from my garden. I do love painting colour shapes that closely do not mean much but seen from a certain distance they create the image I was trying to portray.

The second one, instead, was made with the leftover paint. I was in my living room looking towards the kitchen. Again the various abstract shapes of colours and hues together create the picture.

Soft and rounded afternoon clouds, Varteg hill

Soft and rounded afternoon clouds, Varteg hill is a studio oil painting.

Started from an unfinished pencil sketch in the car and finished in the studio with oil paint on board.

Canal walk

This is a painting made in the studio and it features the canal walk we used to have when we lived near the Monmouthshire and Brecon canal in Llanover, Wales.

I was attracted by the light and reflections created by the sunshine and it shows a lush vegetation I really love.

Sky and Land, Walking in the Countryside

This is another oil painting featuring the beauty of countryside, where nature is lush and you can walk under a big sky.

I liked the path leading to a distant field behind the line of trees and the open sky above with many passing clouds. The sense of peaceful movement was what I tried to recreate in this landscape.

Clouds and Dandelions

Inspired by open land and big skies, I painted this landscape painting featuring a well known field in Llanover, Wales.

I worked in the studio over some working sessions. My main focus and aim was to capture the sense of space both of the land and the sky, with the soft feeling of playful clouds.

Revisiting the Snowy Path, Ystradfawr Nature Reserve

This is inspired by a plein air study I made in January during a few snowy days.

I wanted to explore more fully the influence of colour, light and atmosphere I experienced on location, with the greater time and comfort that working indoors allows, while still keeping the spontaneity of loose brushstrokes.

Hilltop Trees

Hilltop Trees is an oil painting featuring a view dear to me that I can see from where I live.

After a failed attempt because of the weather conditions, I returned a couple of days left to be welcomed by a lovely sunshine and beautiful cloud formations.

I loved the colours and the light.

Grazing Sheep Under Cumulus Clouds, Ystradfawr Nature Reserve

Grazing Sheep Under Cumulus Clouds, Ystradfawr Nature Reserve is an oil painting featuring exactly what the title says.

Started outdoors and finished in the studio. The aim was looking at the view in terms od shapes and colours to describe the scene as little as possible.

Cluster of Rural Houses in the Nole Countryside, Italy

Cluster of Rural Houses in the Nole Countryside, Italy is another oil painting done in Italy by looking out from the kitchen balcony doors. I was intrigued by those countryside houses surrounded by fields and trees. It was a dull day.

View of Nole's Bell Tower and Valli di Lanzo, Italy

View of Nole's bell tower and Valli di Lanzo, Italy is an oil painting created during my stay at my family's in Italy.

It is what you can see from the kitchen window on the first floor, a beautiful view of the mountain range and the rooftops of houses and bell tower of the little town.

The sunny day offered a clear and lit effect of colours, light and shade.

The Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal in Spring, Llanover

The Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal in Spring, Llanover is a small painting made using a very limited palette of water-mixable oil paints. The colours I used are:

  • Titanium white
  • French ultramarine
  • Cadmium Yellow Pale Hue
  • Cadmium Red Hue
This is a place that gives me a lot of inspiration with its trees, countryside and water. It is a peaceful and beautiful walking path.

The Sunlit Canal Path, Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal, Llanover

The Sunlit Canal Path, Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal, Llanover is inspired by the beautiful late-afternoon walks with the dogs along the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal, when we used to live nearby.

Here, I wanted to capture the sunlight in a loose and immediate way, as it gives a warm touch to the landscape, with the pale blue sky reflected in the fluid mirror of the canal.

Snowy Path, Ystradfawr Nature Reserve

Snowy Path, Ystradfawr Nature Reserve is an oil landscape painting alla prima en plein air in Ystradfawr Nature Reserve.

I was drawn there by the white, soft snow (which white really isn’t!) that created an enchanting effect everywhere.

Snowy Dusty Field, Llanover

Snowy Dusty Field, Llanover is a work that comes from a real moment in a farm field in Llanover – from an initial study on oil paper to this final oil painting on board – an attempt to capture the light and atmosphere that made that dog walk such a lasting memory.

Countryside Path, Corona Verde Stura Nole, Italy

Countryside Path, Corona Verde Stura Nole, Italy is an oil painting resulting from some previous sketches. It features a familiar place in Italy where my dog and I used to walk every day.

I’m particularly fond of the gentle, soft quality of the land beneath the lively sky.

Preparatory sketch on paper - Snowy Dusty field, Llanover

This is Llanover, Monmouthshire.

A snowy field. Mist curling around the trees. The distant point where they meet draws the eye.

It was inspired by a dog walk in early April 2019. Snow from the night before still dusted the ground, and the crisp, fresh cold made every step feel alive.

Second Sketch on paper - The Thames at St James Park, Buckingham Palace

As with the previous oil study, this one is from the same spot along the Thames in St James’s Park, looking towards Buckingham Palace but a little more to the right.

I focused on the light filtering through the trees, where the walking path caught the sun and reflections on the water grew darker and more prominent. Thick palette knife strokes suggest the scene rather than describe it, with warmer tones hinting that autumn is approaching.

First Sketch on paper - The Thames riverbank at St James Park, Buckingham Palace

This is one of two oil studies inspired by a trip to London in 2014.

This study captures the vegetation along the river towards Buckingham Palace, where the light and colours create a beautiful scene to walk through.

Preparatory sketches for Countryside Path, Corona Verde Stura Nole, Italy

These are oil sketches on paper that I made to create a new painting.

They feature a field in Corona Verde Stura Nole, Italy where I used to walk with my dog when we lived there.

I tried to simplify the scene, by focusing on blocks of colours put next to each other instead of the individual elements in the painting.
